What is Mold and Where Does it Come From?
Mold can access and irritate people and animals in a variety of ways. We inhale mold spores into our lungs when we breath. This is why it's important to use proper protection when you clean up even relatively minor patches of mold - and why those who are sensitive to it should not perform this task.
Mold can also get on our skin where it may not cause a direct problem, but if you touch your face with mold - contaminated hands, you may inhale or swallow the spores or get them in your eyes or ears.
Increasing numbers of contact lens wearers have reported going back to wearing eyeglasses after contracting a fungal infection called Fusaruim Keratitis in their eyes through the use of contact lenses. These infections have so far been reported in more than one third of the United States, and are a growing problem. Fusarium is commonly found in plant material and soil. If the infected person does not receive the proper eye-drop treatment, which may take up to 2-3 months, the infection can scar the cornea.
Fungal skin infections have become more common as well. Athletes foot is the most common, but other skin fungal infections are on the rise. Normally, they're treated with one of several topical anti-fungal creams, although in some cases, systemic treatments are prescribed.
